Australia's first lithium battery recycling plant opens

A Victorian company is Australia’s first to recycle lithium batteries which are fast-becoming the main source of power for mobile electronics and large storage batteries in homes and industry.

Until now, used lithium batteries have been sent overseas for recycling, but developing home-grown processing power means taking control of the recycling process in Australia and producing work for local communities. Envirostream Australia’s new $2 million facility at New Gisborne, north of Melbourne, will help keep valuable resources out of landfills.

E-waste Infrastructure Support Program announced

The Victorian Government is investing $16.5 million to upgrade e-waste collection and storage facilities across the state and to deliver an education campaign to support the ban on e-waste in landfills. More than 130 e-waste collection sites will be upgraded across Victoria following a comprehensive review of collection and storage infrastructure.

The E-Waste Infrastructure Grants valued at $15 million is currently available to support infrastructure upgrades that will provide reasonable access to 98% of Victorians across metropolitan and regional areas.
